San Diego Restaurant Week (San Diego, CA, USA) 1.27 - 2.1
Diners can enjoy special three-course meals from San Diego County's top 130 restaurants for the knockdown price of US$30 or US$40 per person during the annual San Diego Restaurant Week, held twice a year in February and June. Carnaval Brasiliero (Palmer Events Centre, Austin, TX USA) 2.2
Austin's annual Carnaval Brasilerio combines the uninhibited sprit of Mardi Gras with colourful Brazilian flamboyance to offer 5000 partygoers an unforgettable night at the Palmer Events Centre. The festival was first organised in 1975 by a number of homesick Brazilian students and has since sealed its reputation as one of the best and biggest of such festivities outside Brazil.
Budapest International Circus Festival (State Circus, Budapest, Hungary) Jan. - Feb.
Budapest, now reputed to be the circus capital of Europe, is hosting its fourth International Circus Festival. The exciting range of acts will be competing in front of an international jury made up of well known representatives of the profession, making it an eagerly-awaited and prestigious event for circus professionals and their spectators. The event will take place in Budapest's State Circus, one of the few purpose-built circus venues in the world. Here, as ever, the big tent is pitched in the heart of the City Park.
Monte Carlo Historic Car Rally (Automotive Club de Monaco, Monte Carlo, Monaco) Jan. - Feb.
Historic sports cars come out of storage, are spruced up and prepared for this challenging rally, which starts in Valence, pauses in Gap and ends in Monaco. 2008 is the eighth year of the rally, which ends, as usual, in Monaco. Abelaide's Big Day Out (Royal Adelaide Showground, Adelaide, Australia) 2.1
Australia's huge touring music festival, Big Day Out, hits Adelaide at the Royal Adelaide Showground. The festival begins its tour in Auckland, New Zealand then explodes into Australia over the following three weekends. Established in 1992, the festival has grown steadily each year to reach its present status as Australia's biggest music event, attracting top bands from around the world, as well as the finest Antipodean talent.

Taking place for one night only in the open air of the Domain in Sydney Botanical Gardens, the Sony Tropfest Film Festival is beamed simultaneously across the capital cities of Australia. The festival is a competition of shorts. Seven minutes is the maximum length of time you get to thrill - or bore - your punters. It has inspired some real gems in its brief career, and doubtless will not fail to deliver this time around. Audiences of over 150,000 attend the festival across the country, watching 16 films judged by the five judges to be the best of 700.

International Short Film Festival (Palais des Beaux Arts, Lille, France) 2.1 (Annual)
The festival kicks off with the spectacular Nuit Visio Sonik, a night where groups of musicians, artists, DJs and VJs combine to create an unforgettable visionary experience into the early hours. The 100 best short films of the year are screened over five days, set to three themes: fiction, animation and experimental. An international judging panel then decides the top 12 winners. Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale - Palast, Berlin, Germany) 2.1
Featuring a juried international competition, a market and a very large number of screenings arranged under various categories, the Berlin International Film Festival is the biggest movie event in Germany and one of the most important film festivals in Europe. As well as its competition and main screenings, the festival also hosts an annual competition of "shooting stars" - 18 filmmakers who have made their names in their respective countries - as well as the increasingly popular Forum of Young Cinema and the children's film festival.

Napier's Art Deco Weekend is held every year on the third week of February, celebrating the extraordinary Art Deco splendour that characterises this unique North Island east coast town. Jerez Flamenco Festival (Teatro Villamarta, Jerez de La Frontera, Spain) Feb. - March (Annual)
This flamenco festival in Jerez has become one of the most important in the world, with a programme of internationally-renowned stars. There are performances by singers, dancers and guitar players at the principle venue, the Villamarta Theatre, and other venues around the city, as well as dance courses, concerts and exhibitions. The whole city snaps awake to the clack of castanets, the stomp of tacones (heels) and the distinctive melancholy of flamenco.
